Kolkata should have an Inner Ring Road and an Outer Ring Road

Just like Bangalore and many other upcoming cities, Kolkata should have 2 ring roads. One Outer Ring Road and one Inner Ring Road (as shown in the photo below)

The inner ring road should be 2 X 2 lane which should be elevated as flyovers across the city  for smooth movement of traffic. This road should meet other roads at 10 important points and that too in a scientific manner so that the traffic movement in not hampered.

The outer ring road should also be elevated at places where there are lot of traffic and it can be at ground level now but should be planned to be elevated in future so that the traffic moment in not hampered.

See the photo below to see the places of Kolkata where the outer ring road and inner ring road should pass.
Hope this is implemented soon.

I - THEN AND NOW

Those days were nice. These times are good. I was in Kolkata then, now I am in Pune. Those days I used to walk through the lanes and bye lanes of Bowbazar, Central Kolkata searching for a better life. Now I walk along the broad streets of Hinjewadi. In those days, I was close to my parents, my sister, my grandparents & my love Kutu. Now I am close to my roommate Abhisek, my colleagues at Idea Cellular, and my building-mates and now I am 1800 km away from my parents, my room and my city. Then I used to lie down in my own bed at my room, look at the blue sky and dream big. Now I sit at my office dream to make it bigger in life. Those days I used to work for Digital Avenues. Now I work for Idea Cellular-IBM partnership.

Those days I had Gaurav as my closest friend. Now there are scarcity of close friends with whom, I could share my deepest thoughts. Weather in Kolkata was hot and humid during summer and monsoon and pleasant during winter. Weather in Pune is pleasant during winter, monsoon and scorching hot for the 2-3 months of summer. There was a lot of life around during those times but now lifelessness is all around.

There was poverty all around in those times. Now hardly poverty can be found near me. I am still the same in terms of wealth as I was then. People are rich here and very hard working, especially the Marathi women. There was value for money at Kolkata and you could hardly find torn notes. Now there is hardly any value for 10, 50, 100 notes and regularly we could find notes of these figure torn. Opportunity to make it big was less in Kolkata but here in Pune opportunity to make it big is more.

I could hardly ask for a lift from a two wheeler guy then, but now I often ask for it while I go to my office and luckily I get them. People at office then were very friendly and used to help at every step but now people are harsh, rude and alert. Work at Digital Avenues was fun then, but work now at Idea is like a burden thrust upon me. In those days I used to teach Rohan-Rishita at Park Circus – Theatre Road visit Park Circus now and then to meet Kutu. Now I do not have a proper place to visit. I used to Walk doen Rashbehari Avenue, Gariahat, Ballygunge with my Kutu hand in hand. Now I visit places very rare like Dange Chowk, Kalewadi Phata, Mumbai-Pune Expressway, Pune University, Radhika, Deep Restaurant, Senapati Bapat Road, MANPA, Pune Station.

In those days Saturday mornings were lazy, laid back with bread, tea and shingara (samosa). Now Saturday mornings are fast and I visit Hinjewadi IT Park for better opportunity. Life hasn’t changed much now but it is the places, the people and the things around me that have changed. Waiting for a bigger break in life.

Bad Pitch - Light Problem - What is happening with India?

What is happening with India nowadays? Lights of Eden Gardens, Kolkata are suddenly getting dim and close to off while the cricket match is going on. Thank God the match was not called off that day.

Again, the pitch of the Feroz Shah Kotla Ground, New Delhi is being declared unfit after the match is half way on. The match got called off.

What is all this happening with India? Is this a conspiracy to demean India's image? What do you say friends?

Yeh Hain Maidan, Meri Jaan

I have some good memories of the Maidan of Kolkata. It was called Gorer Maath then which meant Field of the Fort. Gor means Fort in Bengali and Maath means Field. By fort we refer to Fort Willam which is present on the western side of the Maidan.

As a child, I used to go to the Maidan with my Guggy (my maternal grandfather) in his kochi kolapata (light green) colour Fiat (Premier Padmini) in the 1980s. We used to set off for Maidan from our house at Bowbazar at around 5pm. People who accompanied us were Dilu, Ratan, Ludu-da, Tepi and many more. They used to be my co-players at the limited overs cricket match we used to play at Maidan.

On reaching Maidan we used to get so much excited that after getting off from our car, we (Dilu and me) used to somersault as many times as we could till we used to get exhausted. On being tired we used to refresh ourselves with Thums Up, which was the only option for cold drinks at that time (Coke had long left India for USA and Pepsi was not born then in India). We also used to have phuchka and jhalmuri / bhelpuri.

When we wanted to plant the stumps (reminds me of the famous saying by Tony Greig - "From stUmp to stUmp and from wickIt to wickIt") on the ground, mounted police officers (who were actually army men on horsebacks) used to come and used to break our stumps or threaten us to remove the stumps from digging on the ground. Actually the army men were there to look after the safety of the Maidan and thus they used to do rounds and keep a strict vigilance inside around the Maidan to keep a watch on the big Maidan.

There was a triangular field in the middle of the big Maidan where there used to be 3-4 small golf courses with many holes (not the hole of Mint with the Hole) for beginners I guess. I don’t know who used to play golf there but whenever I went there along with cricket kit, I used to take my hockey stick there and tried to hole the ball with my hockey stick and once I did that I had to pick the ball from those holes using my hand after a lot of difficulty as the holes were quite small. I feared if there might be many snakes or rodents which might bite my fingers.

I also used to visit the Maidan with my mummy and daddy from our Park Circus flat on a cab or by our car. As we approached the Maidan from S.N. Banerjee Road, the evening sun from above the Eden Gardens used to shine on our eyes thus making it difficult for us as well as the person who is driving the car to look in front.

As we approached the Maidan, we used to enter the Maidan from Red Road approach (which was both ways then), we felt like we have reached a place filled with fresh air very much comparable to heaven. The whip of fresh air on us made us breathe out lungs out to the fullest. It made us get free from all our tensions and forget all our sorrows and pains.
Thus the visits to the Maidan was so much enriching for us that we used to visit the heavenly place once a week and sometimes twice or thrice a week during vacations.

Thus I could never think of a place in Kolkata better than the Maidan to get myself rejuvinated.

Photography Mania One - Part 1

I am an amateur photographer with a baby camera ( Sony-DSC-W55), but it is a lot for me as this is my first camera and I longed for it for many decades. At last, on the last February, I managed to buy me this camera which would be handy and get inside my pockets (so that she can travel with me wherever I go) and also at par in clarity from shot range with hi-fi cameras though not in zoom feature. Still I managed to take around 6K photographs. Have a look at some of my photography: -

a) Flickr Photography: - http://flickr.com/photos/vaijayanta
c) JPG Magazine Photography: - http://jpgmag.com/people/vaichatt

In the process, I have managed to make many new amateur as well as professional photographer friends. Let me introduce them and their photography to you: -

1) Subhamoy Sinha Roy ( He is my Sir and Dada at IEM, Sector V, Salt Lake who is an amazing amateur-tured-professional photographer.)

a) Flickr Photography: - http://flickr.com/photos/subhamoysr/

2) Shubhajyoti Roychowdhury (He is my school class mate from class 3 till class 12 at DBPC and a great amateur photographer who has an amazing concept and soon he will be at par with professional photographers.)

3) Satyaki Basu (He is a doctor by profession and a great amateur-turned-professional photographer.)

4) Koustav K. Dutta (He is my new orkut friend and an amazing photographer whose photography is no less than a professional. He is Mr. Clarity as every photograph of his is very clear and interesting.)

5) Chaitali Dutta Chowdhury (She is my college class mate at IEM and an amazing amateur photographer at par with any professional photographer.)

a) Flickr Photography: - http://www.flickr.com/photos/44607342@N00/

I have noticed one thing in orkut. All these friend of mine are related to each other directly or indirectly and this thing really makes me feel like being a proud part of the imaginary photographers community. Thus I am really fortunate to have these talented friends and their photography makes me sit and view them during my past time and grow creative mindset towards photography. I am learning a lot from them about photography. I am a great fan of my photographer friends. Looking forward to include more people in this imaginary community. I will have more posts on Photography Mania One as we include more people in this imaginary community.

Harrassment by a Shuttle Maruti Van No WB02 - 3151

The driver of a Grey/Ash colour, old, 8 seater Maruti Van (number WB02 - 3151) plying between Exide Stoppage and Karunamoyi in Salt Lake is harassing people. He charges rates double rates during office hours and the people during office hours finding no other solution takes his shuttle and falls his victim. If the charge between Exide and Salt Lake is Rupees 15, he charges Rupees 30 after reaching the destination. The diver is a healthy non guy with a moustache demands that he will start doing "bawal" on the passengers if he is not paid the money he demands.

Initially he agrees with the existing amount with the passengers. After reaching the destination, he demands that he should be paid double the amount at any cost, otherwise he will use his sources to create tension among the passengers and would use unfair means to get double the actual amount.

This is what had happened with me today. Today 18th October, 2008 at 5.45pm I asked this driver waiting at Exide crossing near Haldirams to take me and my gf to Darga Road crossing. I asked him what would he charge for it. He said he would charge Rs. 5 (five) each, so we got into the car and sat on the empty seat. Next people came and sat on the 8 seater Maruti Van. As it got filled, the driver took the car and as Darga Road crossing came, he stopped the car about half a kilometer away from the crossing (shows he had evil intentions) and demanded that I give him Rupees 10 each instead of Rupees 5, otherwise he will not let me and my gf go from there. It was 6.10pm then. Thus he came out of the car and started using slang languages in broken Bengali (he is a non-Bengali as it seemed by his language). I said that I cannot give him more than Rupees 10 for both as he had told me to give Rupees 5 each and we are 2 people so he should take Rupees Rupees 10 from me. But he kept quiet about the matter that he had told me that he would take Rupees 5 each.

I told him that I would like to go to a Traffic Sergeant and settle the matter. So I took him to the Sergent waiting at the Darga Road & Park Circus Connector Crossing near Bridge no 4. I related about the whole incident to the Sergeant. The Sergent was indifferent. He was not interested on the matter and told me that I should not give more than Rupees 5 each to the driver and he left to do his job. In the meantime when I was approaching the Sergeant alone he told my gf that she should pay him the money he demands else he should not let her come to me and said he would use more slang language on me.

Later I saw that I was getting late for my next job and my gf was also tired and was on the verge of weeping. So I let the man go off with Rupees 20 and took his car number, so that I can write this blog and make this post an eye opener about this driver and other drivers who charge more than the actual amount and that too maliciously. (Initially drawing the passenger by telling him about the actual fare and demanding double the fare when the destination is about to be reached). Later when I let the driver go away, the traffic Sergeant came to me and told me why did I give the money to the driver. This showed that how the traffic Sergeant was afraid of that driver and did not help a person in danger along with his companion, instead the Sergeant in fear let the driver go away. This is the condition of Kolkata today. Hope someone listens. Will I not get a proper justice for this? How long will this continue?

I would like to bring this post to the notice of some people: -

1) The Kolkata Police (who are afraid of the main culprits)
2) The Government of West Bengal (who are indifferent)
3) The Transport Department of West Bengal for allowing such morons to do business with old cars.
4) The Unions of Shuttle Cars to let such illegal cars ply the city and demand high transportation charges by such moron drivers.

Baghbazar Sarbojanin Durgotsav & Exhibition

Website: http://bsde.org/

About the Puja: -

If we talk about festivals then we talk about love and togetherness we think about prosper and an overspread joy around. Once again if we talk about festival we think about some of the flashing moments around the world like; Rio, Paris and our very own KOLKATA and in Kolkata its definitely DURGA-PUJA , and when it comes about the Durga-Puja of Kolkata it ultimately comes to BAGHBAZAR SARBOJONIN DURGOTSAB AND EXHIBITION !!!

The history of human civilization says, people wanted to be together for protection for togetherness and for celebration. Baghbazar Sarbojonin Durgotsab and Exhibition has been with these primal facts for last 88 years with its tradition of synchronizing different ages ideas and people.

In this glorious past it has came through enormous challenges but in the dream of a better world with love and unity; prosperity and happiness it has celebrated Durgotsab the biggest carnival of the country along with other social and cultural activities. Though according to Hindu mythology Devi(Goddess) Durga is the power of defeating the evils and the constructor of peace but the celebration of Durga Puja in this very time is not only a festival or a carnival not even it's a time to strengthen your bond with the people around you and that is being done by this auspicious organization and it will just go on.

NOTE: - This article has been published on the request of Mr. Mihir Kundu of the Puja Committee.

PROPOSAL FOR SKYBRIDGES IN CENTRAL KOLKATA

As a citizen of India, I am proposing a new project in Central Kolkata that would help both Esplanade-Sealdah bound pedestrians as well as traffic in Central Kolkata. The stretch between Sealdah Station through B.B. Ganguly Street till various entry points in Esplanade can be thought of as the place where the project can be built. ( see the diagram below)

The Red Coloured Markings depict the path of the Sky Bridges

(click on the picture above to see the bigger view of the picture)

Currently what happens is that because of the huge rush of lakhs of walking office-goers in this stretch, the traffic system cannot move freely. So does the office-goers who walk in this stretch has to stop on the crossings to let the cars pass bye. Thus is becomes difficult for the traffic police to control the traffic as well the huge rush of pedestrians during office hours. If this project is thought of and implemented, then it would be a boon for the everyone who pass bye this area during various periods of the day.

The interior of the Sky Bridges might look like this

Some of the issues related to the project: -

Advantages: -

1. No earth work (do digging of earth like in subways)

2. Shade from bad weather (if a shade is provided on the top of the way)

3. Easy and economic travel from one part of the city to another (no cost travelling is what people want)

4. Completing the walk within 15 - 20 minutes which normally takes more than 40 minutes

5. No traffic, no jam

6. Small parts of the whole traffic can be built elsewhere and assembled in the actual site of the sky-bridge to ease confusion and chaos.

7. Electric elevators could be set up to carry people to the height.

8. Environment friendly way of transporting people as well as least use of power (power might be needed for elevators and lights during the night)

9. Because of less people on the roads, the roads will be less congested and the traffic can move freely on the roads without much disruption.

10. No tension during waterlogging in the streets.

This is how the Sky Bridge might look from outside

Disadvantages: -

1. A bit of chaos when the whole unit will be set up in the area.

2. Less space in B.B. Ganguly Street.

3. Newly proposed underground metro railway and its construction along with existing tram and other vehicles might cause a chaos in the area.

4. Buildings which are on the two sides of B.B. Ganguly street might be at a threat but if the sky-bridge is closed with high railings on both sides as well as a shade on top, it might bring respite to the residents of the area. (thus stopping unsocial activities)

Another interior view of an expensive Sky Bridge

Who will be benefited: -

1. Office-goers who travel from Sealdah till Esplanade ( as they want a cost effective way of travelling through the stretch and what can be a more cost effective way of travelling other than this?)

2. School goers

3. Daily commuters (who wants to cover the stretch during different times of the day)

4. The old people

Who should not be allowed inside the bridges: -

1. beggars (as they might create unnecessary resistance among walkers)

2. hawkers who wants to set up their business inside the sky-bridges (as they might create unnecessary resistance among walkers)

3. Cyclists with cycles (as they might be a danger to the walkers)

Open timings of the sky-bridge: -

  • 8.00 AM in the morning (when most of the traffic starts increasing) till11.00 PM at night (when most of the last trains set off from Sealdah)

It might be kept: -

  • One way from 8.00 AM to 12.00 NOON (passengers moving from Sealdah to Esplanade)
  • Both ways from 12.00 NOON to 5.00 PM (when the passenger intensity is less)
  • Again one way from 5.00 PM to 11.00 PM (when the passengers will be travelling from Esplanade to Sealdah to catch trains)
  • Closed for people from 11.00 PM to 8.00 AM to prevent unsocial activities inside the sky-bridges. Thus all the entry points will have to be closed during this period.

Conclusion: -

No such projects have been proposed for Kolkata yet, and if it is done it can provide a great ease for the daily commuters as well as the traffic system in Central Kolkata. Once completed, it would be a grand project for easing the traffic tension in Central Kolkata for centuries to come. If this Sky Bridge is a huge success, then many such bridges can be built all over Kolkata for smooth flow of pedestrians.

Dynamic Tower - Shape Shifting Tower

Dynamic Tower - Shape Shifting Tower

Italian architect David Fisher is building his first skyscraper, the Dynamic Tower, and it happens to be one of the most ambitious construction plans since the Pyramid of Khufu. Every floor of the 80-story self-powered building rotates according to voice command, and nearly the entire construction of the $700 million structure is pre-made

Fisher was inspired to design the Dynamic Tower during a visit to a friend's top-floor Midtown Manhattan apartment. "I had a view of the Hudson River and East River at the same time, it was beautiful and I wanted to make that feeling accessible to more people." He loves the idea of seeing the sun rise and set in the same room, and considers the building to be four-dimensional. "Time is always changing the shape of the building," he told me.

The rotation takes up to 3 hours (so you're not always spilling your coffee), and gets power from photovoltaic solar cells and 79 wind turbines, one located between each floor. The system is meant to create enough energy to power to the entire tower and still have juice to spare for some surrounding buildings. According to Fisher, two of these $700 million futuristic scrapers are planned so far, one each in Dubai and Moscow. They will be built using a truly radical technique.

Construction on the Dynamic Tower will be unlike anything that preceded it. The only part of the tower built on site will be the skinny center core. It is strong enough to hold the floors in place, and will contain the building's elevators, which transport people and cars right to their door. Each floor will be made piece by piece in a factory in Italy—a throwback to Fisher's previous life in prefabricated bathroom design—and placed onto the core using a lift system. With this method, each story is completed in about six days. By comparison, traditional ground-up methods can take six weeks per floor.

Groundbreaking for Dynamic Towers in Dubai and Moscow is expected to happen in the fall, with construction reaching completion by the end of 2010. If you're game—and very, very loaded—you can sign up now for a villa or office space. The going rate is $3000/sq foot.

Front View of South City Mall

Front View of South City Mall
-
I had taken many pictures of South City Mall earlier but I had always forgotten to take the front view of the Mall. Today I got it from one of my friend named Paramita who had gone to the Mall yesterday with her hubby for their Marriage Anniversary and she took the photo from the front. Thus I borrowed the pic from her. Thank You Paramita.

If you look carefully, you can see the top portion of one of the towers of South City Towers on the top right hand side of the picture.

2nd Metro Railway in Kolkata

We are going to have a second Metro Railway in Kolkata soon. I would like to discuss the boons and the banes that would follow it: -

Boons: -

1) We can reach Howrah within 15 minutes of Metro Journey from Bowbazar.

2) We can reach Salt Lake (including Sector V) withing 20 minutes from Bowbazar.

3) More people will be moving through this lifeline or East-West Metro Corridor as a result there will be less air and noise pollution in these stretch.

Banes: -

1) At least 100 buildings in B.B. Ganguly Street will collapse like packs of cards.

2) Many insane people will protest the building of the East-West Metro Railway.

3) Construction work will go for at least next 10 years in the new Metro Railway route with severe waterlogging during monsoons.

Zamadar - i - System & Waterlogging in Kolkata during Monsoon

In this Monsoon, Kolkata would be waterlogged like last 2 years. Each of us will be pointing our fingers to the Mayor and other Government Departments. But actually there are a bunch of people who are actually responsible for this waterlogging in Kolkata.

They are our respected Zamadars or Jamadars or Sweepers as we call them. They do not have any basic idea of cleaning the roads. What they do is take 75% of the garbage from the subbordinate VATs to the main VATS from where they are transported to Dhapa or Sewage Disposal Ground in East Kolkata. But throughout the year, the remaining 25% garbage is put by them inside the various drains (bit by bit) and drainage systems which are actually meant for transportation of dirty water. So these drainage system gets choaked by the blessings of the sweepers and in return the gift we get every year during monsoon is severe waterlogging.

People from the Government who are responsible for guiding the sweepers should be made aware of the reasons of waterlogging and should be asked to make the sweepers aware of the adverse effects of disposing the 25% garbage inside the drains of they city. They should be asked to dispose the whole 100% garbage to the Garbage Disposal Ground.

Vaijayanta got hurt

It was last Tuesday the 29th of April, 2008 when I was going to my office, I got injured. I walked from my home till Wellington Square and from there I was about to board an auto rickshaw to Bata in Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Road. I normally take an auto to office as that is much tension free option and while travelling on a public transport I get to see different types of faces everyday and sometimes some hot chicks.

So as everyday I left the filled up auto but quickly went towards an empty auto behind it. I was the first person to get into the auto at the back seat. As I was about to enter the auto, I injured my head with a protruding false ceiling that protruded downwards like a circular pyramid. (one circle on top of the other). On the last one there was a electric light.

I questioned the auto driver, "Ei sob ki lagiye rekhechen?". The non-Bengali auto driver said, "Auto ke owner yeh sab banatein hain". I kept quite to that as I thought that the owner might be having such queer ideas of decorating the auto, so there was no point cursing the driver. The ugly looking lady (might be from CMC, Ripon Street, as I saw her getting down there) kept of forcing the driver to drive the auto fast as she was getting late. Later I realised I saw the ugly lady running towards the auto and so I rushed inside so that I can get inside faster. It was because of this lady that I got hurt. Even seeing me get hurt, to my astonishment, that ugly lady told the driver, "Bahut hogaya, ab gari chalaiye". I got furious and later in my mind, I cursed her with all my cursing diction.

I kept on massaging the area where I got hurt with my right hand till I felt the pain get nullified. There was a kind young man beside the lady, who got pity on me and told the driver, "Logon ka sar phodney ke liye aap yeh sab banaye hain?". I laughed in my mind imagining the owner of the auto decorating it to crush the heads of the poor passengers. I also thanked the kind man in my mind for feeling pity on me.

Later I reached office and treated the hurt area with water from the basin. I thought the office AC would do the trick of ice on my head. Today is 1st of May and I am still having an acute pain on the top of my head if I put my hand there and press the area a bit. Hope it gets fine soon.

Bengali Year 1415 on 2008 - 2009

This Nabobarsho (Bengali Year 1415), we (Gaurav and me) had planned a long walk from my Home to Shyambazar. We did as planned. We started off from my home at 10.30am and as we walked through Amherst Street, Surjya Sen Street, Bankim Chatterjee Street and finally Bidhan Sarani. As we arrived at Bidhan Sarani, I took a snap of Presidency College Gate. After that as we walked towards Shyambazar, we took pictures of all the Heritage Buildings on that road (I am going to post these pics later here) like the existing portion of College Street Market, Lahabari, , Arya Samaj Hall, Hardinge Hall, House of Swami Vivekananda, Bethune College, Scottish Church School and many more.

There was a big mela (fair) going on at Beadon Street. We had a good time there at the mela. Again we took Bidhan Sarani and proceeded towards Shyambazar. At Hatibagan we took a snap of Star Theatre and I charged up myself with a Thumbs Up with Gaurav sitting idle because of his sore throat. At the Citi Mart, I bought myself a Bermuda short and Gaurav helped me with the payment as I was short of money. Finally we took a snap of the Shyambazar tram depot before taking two big snaps of Netaji on a horse at Shyambazar Crossing. With our long journey by walk coming to an end, we took a bus to Bank of India at 1.30pm.

That evening I sat idle before our television talking cute snaps of beauties on television. Mummy had gone to fetch Bui from her friend Gouri’s house and daddy had gone to give his tutorial classes. Mummy even treated us with momo and chow from Momo-Hut, Salt Lake for dinner. It was a wonderful Nabobarsho 2008 for me and was the best Nabobarsho till date. Shubho Nababarsho to You All.
