Those were the days when Rani Rashmoni, the widow of a zamindar owned large parts of Kolkata. At the same time a young Ramkrishna Chattopadhyay used to chant the mantras of Maa Kali at Dakshineshwar Temple in the northern fringes of Kolkata, which was built by Rani Rashmoni. Ramkrishna Paramhansa was the head priest at the temple.
Swami Vivekananda or Narendranath Dutta, the founder of Ramkrishna Mission was the chief disciple of Ramkrishna Paramhansha. Swami Vivekananda in his young days associated himself with Bramho Samaj which was then led by Keshub Chandra Sen, a religious preacher and a social reformer of his times. He was the private secretary to Dwijendranath Tagore, the eldest son of Debendranath Tagore and the eldest brother of Rabindranath Tagore.
